Corn cob pipes are a famous tradition in American culture. Old Dominion Pipes Company honors that tradition by continuing to produce historically accurate and fully functioning corn cob smoking pipes.
The unique and interesting way Old Dominion Pipe Co. come to be in 2013 is a tale worth telling. Founded by two brothers, Bob and Bill Savage, they were initially interested in preserving a different kind of American history. What Old Dominion calls an "heirloom Indian corn" that had grown in the Eastern United States for generations was on the verge of extinction. Bill determined that this corn made sweeter cornmeal and was determined to preserve the country's farming history with this corn.
So the brothers decided to harvest this heirloom Indian corn. After collecting the actual corn, Bob decided to take one of the leftover cobs and construct his own pipe, as he is a fan of corn cob smoking pipes. This was the beginning of the concept of Old Dominion.
Then, one day after doing a check on a plowed field, they discovered the remains of an old Virginia colonial plantation site. This site dates back to the 1600s and unearthed plenty of knowledge of colonial and old US life, as well as important artifacts such as clay pipes of the era. Using the excavated clay smoking pipes, the brothers reverse engineered molds to make new clay pipes. Now selling both clay and corn cob smoking pipes, Old Dominion Pipe Co. provides old school smoking pipes for fans and collectors alike.
The corn cob pipes produced by Old Dominion Pipe Co. are made with a historically authentic bamboo stem. This is unique among American pipe manufactures. Most corn cob pipes today have stems made of varying types of wood.
